In the early morning hours of April 16, 2025, the life of 21-year-old Amon Kevone Harvey, a male resident of Americus, Georgia, was tragically cut short. Just before 1:00 a.m., officers from the Americus Police Department were dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of Glory Court following a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Harvey inside the home, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Emergency first aid was rendered at the scene until medical personnel could take over. Harvey was initially transported to Phoebe Sumter Regional Medical Center and was later airlifted to a trauma center in Macon. Despite the efforts to save him, he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the homicide quickly identified a suspect: 20-year-old Kentravious Lemond Holmes, also a resident of Americus. The Americus Police Department issued a warrant for his arrest on charges of Felony Murder and Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Felony. Following a manhunt, Holmes was taken into custody and booked into the Sumter County Jail. The motive for the shooting and the relationship, if any, between Harvey and Holmes have not been publicly detailed. The community was left to mourn the loss of a young man, while the legal process against the alleged perpetrator began.
The case took a dramatic turn when, on the evening of February 8, 2026, Holmes, along with another inmate, Rickey Martin, escaped from the Sumter County Jail. The two men, both facing murder charges in separate cases, reportedly compromised a maintenance door, accessed the HVAC system, and made their way to the roof to flee the facility. This audacious escape triggered a multi-agency manhunt involving local, state, and federal law enforcement. The search for the two fugitives, described as dangerous, put the community on high alert.
After four days on the run, the extensive search effort came to a successful conclusion. On February 12, 2026, acting on a tip, law enforcement located Holmes and Martin at a residence on Montgomery Street in Americus. A SWAT team and other officers descended on the home, taking both escapees back into custody without incident. A third individual at the residence was also detained. Following their recapture, Holmes was returned to the Sumter County Jail to face the original murder charge in the death of Amon Kevone Harvey, as well as any new charges stemming from his escape.
