Officer William R. Morris, a 52-year-old white male, served with the Americus Police Department in Georgia. On March 10, 1907, Officer Morris was attempting to serve an arrest warrant for a minor offense of disorderly conduct. He and another officer went to the suspect's home to locate him. As Officer Morris entered the darkened home and lit a match, the suspect fired two shots from his bed, striking Officer Morris in the abdomen and throat.
