On a Friday night in Kansas City, Missouri, an altercation escalated into deadly violence, claiming the life of 38-year-old Pablo Rodriguez. The shooting occurred on April 12, 2024, in the 1800 block of Hardesty Avenue. First responders discovered Rodriguez unresponsive inside a vehicle and transported him to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
He succumbed to his injuries two days later, on April 14, 2024.
The incident reportedly began with an interaction between two groups of people in separate cars. According to court documents, video footage captured a man, later identified as 27-year-old Sye'e Thomas, exiting a blue sedan and approaching a man who had just left a white Dodge Caravan. Thomas allegedly forced this individual down a set of steps at gunpoint. At this moment, Rodriguez, who was in the front passenger seat of the Caravan, opened his car door. Thomas is then accused of firing at the Caravan, striking Rodriguez.
An associate of Rodriguez, who was allegedly being held at gunpoint, told detectives that Thomas had demanded money and attempted to use him as a human shield. After Rodriguez was shot, this associate ran back to the Caravan, retrieved a firearm, and shot at Thomas as he fled the scene in the blue sedan.
In the ensuing investigation, Sye'e Thomas of Knob Noster, Missouri, was identified as the suspect. He was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action for his alleged role in the death of Pablo Rodriguez. Thomas is being held at the Jackson County Detention Center and was not eligible for bond. His case represents the 43rd homicide in Kansas City in 2024.
