In the fading daylight of a November afternoon in Milledgeville, Georgia, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of the Anthony Way neighborhood, leaving a young life extinguished and a community in shock. Sixteen-year-old Desmond Keishawn Rivers, a male, was found lifeless in the front passenger seat of a dark blue Toyota Corolla, the victim of a single gunshot wound to his forehead. The car, riddled with bullet holes, stood as a grim testament to the violence that had unfolded on November 25, 2023.

The tragic event was the result of a rolling shootout, a dangerous exchange of gunfire between the occupants of the Toyota Corolla and a red Dodge Charger. The Milledgeville Police Department, responding to multiple reports of shots fired, discovered a chaotic scene with several homes and vehicles caught in the crossfire. The incident was quickly deemed to be gang-related by the authorities.

In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement acted swiftly. A Baldwin County deputy spotted the red Dodge Charger on Dunlap Road and conducted a traffic stop, detaining the four occupants for questioning. The investigation rapidly led to the identification of three suspects from the Toyota Corolla. Dillon Chapman, 17, was taken into custody on November 26th, followed by the surrender of a 14-year-old on November 27th. The third suspect, 18-year-old Derquavious Kier, remained at large for nearly a month, prompting a widespread manhunt.

All three suspects faced serious charges, including felony murder, four counts of aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Kier was eventually apprehended in December, found hiding in an apartment closet. Subsequently, a grand jury indicted Kier, Chapman, and two other individuals, Tyreion Deshon Havior and Jamarcus Demond Ingram, on charges related to the murder of Desmond Rivers. The four defendants were scheduled for arraignment in February 2024 to face the charges stemming from the violent altercation that cut short a young man's life.
