In the late evening of Sunday, May 26, 2024, a celebratory atmosphere at a middle school graduation party in Fort Valley, Georgia, turned tragic, ending the life of 31-year-old Micah McCant. A father of three young girls, including twins, McCant was at the party to pick up his daughter when a dispute spiraled out of control. The gathering, held at the Royal Townhomes, had grown to about 30 teenagers when a group of uninvited individuals arrived, sparking a physical altercation.
As adults, including McCant, attempted to intervene and break up the fight, the situation escalated dramatically. It was during this chaos that gunfire erupted. McCant was struck by a bullet and was later transported to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries that same night. Another adult was also shot during the incident but survived.
In the days following the fatal shooting, the Fort Valley Police Department launched an investigation, appealing to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest. Their efforts led them to identify 36-year-old Dexter Oliver, also of Fort Valley, as the suspected shooter.
On Wednesday, following the incident, law enforcement officers located and arrested Dexter Oliver. He has since been charged with the murder of Micah McCant. The investigation has suggested that an adult who was one of the parents of the juveniles involved in the initial fight was the one who pulled out a gun and shot McCant.
