In the late hours of a Saturday in Fort Valley, Georgia, the sounds of a club party were pierced by gunfire, setting in motion a chain of events that would end in tragedy. On May 6, 2023, as Fort Valley Police officers were in the process of dispersing a gathering in the 100 block of East Main Street, shots were fired into the crowd. Amid the chaos, 27-year-old Vintavious Tra'Bobbi Sanders, a Black/African American male from nearby Warner Robins, was struck by the gunfire. Emergency services were called, and he was rushed to Atrium Health Navicent in Macon for treatment of his injuries.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Sanders' condition did not improve. He succumbed to his injuries on the afternoon of Monday, May 8, 2023. His body was then taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab for an autopsy to officially determine the cause of death. Known to his friends and family as 'Tae,' Vintavious was remembered as someone who loved making music and entertaining those close to him, always wearing a smile. He was an employee at the Academy Sports warehouse in Twiggs County.
The Fort Valley Police Department, with the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, launched a homicide investigation. For several months, the case remained under active investigation as authorities sought information from the public to help identify the person or persons responsible for Sanders' death. The investigation led them to a suspect, and on October 12, 2023, authorities arrested Johnquavis Rutledge. He was taken into custody and charged with the murder of Vintavious Sanders. Following his arrest, Rutledge was transported to a regional detention center in Macon. The investigation into the shooting is said to be ongoing.
