In the pursuit of a better life, a dream that had been kindled for fifteen years, Hamza Jamil Zaki Abo Halaoh, a 32-year-old Jordanian man, arrived in the United States. He had left his home, his wife, and his twin three-year-old daughters with the hope of building a future for them, a future they were just ten days away from joining him in. Working as a ride-for-hire driver in Washington, D.C., he was inching closer to realizing that long-held aspiration.
On the evening of Sunday, March
12, 2023, that dream was violently extinguished on a street in Southeast D.C., near Capitol Hill. At approximately 8:25 p.m., police responded to reports of a shooting and a multi-vehicle crash on 11th Street Southeast. They discovered a grim scene: an SUV had crashed into several parked cars, and inside were two men suffering from gunshot wounds. One of those men was Hamza. He and the other victim, 34-year-old Othaniel Gaither, were pronounced dead. A third individual in the SUV was injured in the crash but had not been shot.
The investigation that followed suggested a targeted attack, though police do not believe that Hamza was the intended victim. It is thought that he was an innocent bystander caught in a conflict that may have started on a nearby interstate. A firearm was recovered at the scene, but there was no evidence to suggest that Hamza or the other victim had been armed or had returned fire.
As of the latest reports, no arrests have been made in connection with the double homicide. The suspect's vehicle was described only as a sedan. The Metropolitan Police Department has offered a substantial reward for any information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case, which remains an active investigation. The Jordanian embassy has been in communication with the D.C. police and the FBI regarding the death of their citizen, a man whose personal quest for the American Dream ended in a senseless act of violence.
