In the early hours of a spring morning in the Bronx, the life of Jonathan Maldonado, a 34-year-old Hispanic male, was cut short by gunfire. On April 22, 2022, at approximately 1:28 a.m., police responded to a 911 call reporting a man shot near the corner of East Gun Hill Road and Webster Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found Maldonado unconscious and unresponsive, suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso.
Emergency medical services rushed Maldonado to St.
Barnabas Hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced deceased. A GoFundMe page set up by his family stated that he was on his way home when he was shot and killed in what was described as an attempted robbery. He was remembered on a gun violence memorial website as a construction worker who was "very much loved" and "always joking."
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, police took a person of interest into custody near the scene and recovered a firearm. This individual was later identified as 36-year-old Supreme Williams of the Bronx.
Williams was subsequently arrested and charged with murder, manslaughter, two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, and criminal possession of a controlled substance in connection with Jonathan Maldonado's death. The investigation into the incident remained ongoing.
