In the spring of 2020, Najai Nigel Sow, a 35-year-old man from the Bronx, was a familiar and positive presence in his Longwood neighborhood. Known for helping neighbors' children with their homework, he was also a father and an aspiring figure in the local rap scene, having started his own music label. His life, however, came to a sudden and violent end on the evening of May 23rd.
That day, at approximately 5:40 p.m., Sow was in the lobby of his apartment building on Hoe Avenue, near
Bruckner Boulevard. The ordinary moments of his day were shattered when a neighbor, 42-year-old Vincent Gibson, approached him. The entire tragic encounter was captured by a security camera inside the building. The footage showed Gibson, his face partially obscured by a safety mask, confronting Sow and shooting him in the mid-section before quickly fleeing the scene. First responders found Sow unconscious, having been shot three times in the torso. He was rushed to Lincoln Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
The investigation into the city's first homicide in the 41st Precinct that year moved swiftly. The clear surveillance video led police to identify Vincent Gibson, who lived just two blocks away from the victim. He was subsequently arrested and faced serious charges, including murder, manslaughter, and weapon possession. While the authorities took a suspect into custody, the motive for the fatal shooting was not publicly disclosed by investigators, leaving a community to mourn a life cut short and to grapple with the unanswered questions behind the violence that unfolded in their own hallway.
