On May 1, 1914, Chief of Police Sanford S. Perryman of the Sylacauga Police Department in Alabama was fatally wounded in the line of duty. The incident occurred when Chief Perryman confronted a local pool hall owner disembarking from the afternoon train, suspecting him of transporting illegal whiskey.
