In the quiet town of Sylacauga, Alabama, 81-year-old Douglas Charles Jude, a male, became the victim of a brutal assault that would ultimately claim his life. On November 22, 2022, while resting in his bed, he was violently attacked by a man named Christopher Grantham. The assailant had reportedly just left the Coosa Valley Medical Center's Emergency Department before making his way to Jude's residence.
The assault left Jude with extensive trauma.
Following the attack, Grantham stole Jude's 2010 Honda Accord and his cell phone before fleeing. Despite his severe injuries, Jude attempted to drive himself to the hospital. However, the extent of his trauma caused him to be involved in a motor vehicle accident on West 4th Street, where responding police officers discovered him. Jude was able to communicate to the officers what had transpired before he was transported to the Coosa Valley Medical Center and later transferred to the intensive care unit at UAB Hospital. After more than three weeks of fighting for his life, Douglas Charles Jude succumbed to his injuries on Friday, December 16, 2022.
The suspect, Christopher Grantham, was apprehended in Lynn Haven, Florida. He was pulled over by local police while driving the victim's stolen vehicle and was initially arrested for Driving Under the Influence. Grantham was held at the Bay County Jail before being extradited back to Talladega County on December 7, 2022. Initially facing charges of first-degree assault and first-degree theft of property, the charges against Grantham were upgraded to murder following Jude's death. He has been incarcerated at the Talladega County Jail since his extradition.
