In the early morning hours of Wednesday, December 20, 2023, the life of 34-year-old Hector David was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire outside a Bronx apartment building. Police responded to a 911 call reporting shots fired at approximately 3:39 a.m. outside of 3836 Carpenter Avenue in the Williamsbridge section of the borough. Upon their arrival, officers discovered David with a single, fatal gunshot wound to the left side of his torso.
Emergency medical services arrived at the
scene and quickly transported the gravely injured man to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi. Despite their efforts, Hector David was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The initial investigation into the shooting began with no immediate arrests, leaving a sense of uncertainty hanging over the community as detectives worked to piece together the events that led to the deadly encounter.
Weeks later, a break in the case brought a measure of progress for investigators and the victim's grieving family. On January 10, 2024, the New York Police Department announced the arrest of 22-year-old Daniel Santos in connection with the fatal shooting. Santos, a resident of the East Bronx, was taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder, manslaughter, and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. Authorities reported that Santos had a prior criminal record, including previous arrests for robbery and a firearm-related charge. The motive for the shooting was not immediately made public as the case against Santos prepared to move through the criminal justice system.
