In the winter of 2022, a dispute over a minor car accident in the Bronx escalated into a fatal encounter for 35-year-old Roberto Guerrero. On the evening of January 9th, Guerrero, a resident of the Bronx, found himself in a fender-bender and chose to leave the scene. This decision would tragically lead to his death later that night.
Guerrero was sitting in his double-parked Honda Accord on Walton Avenue, near East 164th Street, when he was confronted by three individuals.
The trio, identified as Djiguiba Fofana, 30, of California, Ibrahima Fofana, 22, of Philadelphia, and LaToya Douglas, 30, also from California, allegedly attempted to pull Guerrero from his vehicle. During the struggle, Djiguiba Fofana is accused of firing a single shot into the car, striking Guerrero in the chest and killing him.
The three suspects attempted to flee the scene in a Jeep Cherokee but were quickly apprehended by law enforcement. Inside their vehicle, police recovered a Ruger handgun. Following the arrests, Djiguiba Fofana was charged with murder and held without bail. Ibrahima Fofana and LaToya Douglas were both charged with criminal possession of a weapon. The motive for the deadly confrontation appears to have stemmed from the earlier car accident, as Guerrero's family stated they had no prior knowledge of the assailants.
At the time of his death, Guerrero was working at a Whole Foods bakery and was reportedly striving to rebuild his life after a previous incarceration. He had been released from prison in March 2021 after serving time for drug and weapon convictions and was on parole. He was a husband and father to a stepdaughter and two biological daughters.
