It was just six days before Christmas in 1995 when a festive shopping trip turned into a scene of unimaginable horror. Twelve-year-old Rafael Gonzalez was at the Little Chester Shoes store in the Bronx with his mother, Maria Carrasquillo, 38, and his 14-year-old brother, Ricardo. Rafael was excited, trying on a pair of sneakers he hoped to receive as a Christmas gift.
His innocent joy was shattered in an instant when a man, later identified as 22-year-old Michael Vernon, unleashed a barrage of gunfire within the confines of the small store.
The tragic event unfolded on December 19, 1995, as what began as a botched robbery quickly escalated into a senseless act of violence. Vernon, who had reportedly been casing the store under the guise of looking for a specific pair of boots, opened fire indiscriminately. In the chaos that ensued, Rafael, his brother Ricardo, and their mother Maria were all fatally shot. The violence also claimed the lives of two others in the store: Kyong Bae, the 41-year-old wife of the store's owner, and another individual. Several others were wounded but survived the attack.
In the immediate aftermath, as terror gripped the Bronx community, law enforcement launched a swift response. Michael Vernon attempted to flee the scene, even taking a hostage in his desperate bid for escape. However, his flight was short-lived. A confrontation with police officers erupted in the snowy streets outside the shoe store, and Vernon was shot and apprehended.
