In the Belmont section of the Bronx, a burst of gunfire in the middle of the afternoon on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, tragically cut short the life of 19-year-old Lamar Simmons. The young man was shot in the chest at the intersection of East 183rd Street and Hughes Avenue, just a short distance from his home. The incident occurred at approximately 2:06 p.m. in a busy area with businesses and a daycare nearby.
First responders found Simmons unconscious and unresponsive at the scene.
He was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital in critical condition but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. His family, who described him as the youngest in the family, was left heartbroken and in disbelief at the sudden loss of the high school student. A friend had reportedly told him to "be safe" just moments before the fatal shooting.
The New York City Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the homicide. According to police, three suspects were seen fleeing the scene eastbound on a scooter. Descriptions of the suspects have been released. One man was reportedly wearing a blue hoodie with white lettering, a black jacket, and white sneakers. A second suspect was described as wearing a red sweater, a black jacket, and white sneakers, while the third was in a black jacket, gray sneakers, and a black mask.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and the investigation remains ongoing. The NYPD's Crime Stoppers hotline has been made available for the public to submit any information that may lead to the apprehension of the individuals responsible for Lamar Simmons' death.
