In the spring of 2023, tragedy struck outside a funeral home in Northeast Washington, D.C., forever altering the lives of a local family. On the afternoon of Tuesday, April 11th, 29-year-old Terrell Coghill, a male resident of Northwest D.C., was shot and killed. The incident occurred in the 4000 block of Benning Road, NE, where Coghill was attending a funeral for a friend, Stephon Carroll, who had also been a victim of gun violence just weeks prior.
Coghill, a loving father and an aspiring hip-hop artist known as Tookahh Hendrixx, was assisting in carrying items to a hearse when gunfire erupted.
The brazen daylight shooting, which happened around 12:17 p.m., also left three other individuals—another man and two women—with critical, life-threatening injuries. According to the Metropolitan Police Department, it appeared that the victims were specifically targeted. The attack unfolded shortly after the conclusion of Carroll's funeral service, a time when mourners were gathered outside the Stewart Funeral Home. The shocking violence at a place of mourning sent ripples of disbelief and sorrow through the community.
In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement launched an intensive investigation into the quadruple shooting. A reward of up to $25,000 was offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. Authorities identified and sought the public's help in locating a suspect vehicle, described as a white Lexus IS350 with possible damage to the front passenger door. This vehicle was later recovered by police. However, despite these early leads in the investigation, no arrests have been announced in connection with the death of Terrell Coghill. The case remains an open and unsolved homicide, a painful reality for a family and community still seeking justice.
