In the summer of 2018, a burst of violence in the District of Columbia claimed the life of 25-year-old Kayvon Herder. On the afternoon of Tuesday, August 14, at approximately 12:22 p.m., the scene at Snaps Barber Shop in the 6200 block of Dix Street NE was shattered by gunfire. Two men inside the barbershop were targeted in the attack.
When Metropolitan Police Department officers arrived at the scene, they found two men suffering from gunshot wounds.
One of the victims was rushed to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. The other man, Kayvon Herder, was pronounced dead at the scene. He had no fixed address, according to police reports at the time. The second victim, who was not identified, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, police began searching for suspects who had reportedly fled the scene in a black four-door Infiniti with paper tags. However, a detailed description of the individuals responsible for the homicide was not available. As of September 2018, no arrests had been made in connection with the murder of Kayvon Herder, and the case remained one of several unsolved homicides in the city for that month.
The Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch is handling the ongoing investigation into Herder's death. Authorities have offered a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this crime. The investigation remains open as police continue to seek assistance from the public to bring closure to the case.
