In the early morning hours of Sunday, February 27, 2022, the life of 32-year-old Michael Whitehead of Hyattsville, Maryland, was tragically cut short in Northwest Washington, D.C. At approximately 4:48 a.m., officers from the Metropolitan Police Department responded to the 100 block of N Street, NW, following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Mr. Whitehead suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, and Mr.
Whitehead was quickly transported to a local hospital for medical attention. Despite the life-saving efforts of the medical personnel, he ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The location of the shooting was noted to be near Dunbar High School, a detail that painted a grim picture of the violence that had unfolded.
In the weeks that followed, homicide detectives diligently pursued leads to identify the person or persons responsible for Mr. Whitehead's death. Their investigation led them to identify 33-year-old Darrow Johnson of Clinton, Maryland, as a suspect. On April 21, 2022, Johnson was apprehended by members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force.
Following his arrest, Darrow Johnson was charged with second-degree murder while armed in connection with the fatal shooting of Michael Whitehead. The case was officially closed with the arrest, bringing a measure of resolution to the investigation, though the motive for the shooting was not immediately made public. The Metropolitan Police Department had previously offered a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.
