In the late afternoon of Wednesday, May 10, 2023, the sounds of gunshots shattered the quiet of the 900 block of Decatur Street in Northwest Washington, D.C. When officers from the Metropolitan Police Department's Fourth District arrived at the scene around 4:48 p.m., they discovered a young man, 24-year-old Aaron Derricott, Jr., unconscious and unresponsive.
He had been shot.
Emergency services quickly transported him to a local hospital, but despite all life-saving efforts, Derricott succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. A resident of Northwest D.C. himself, his life was cut short in an act of violence that left the community seeking answers.
In the immediate aftermath, detectives from the Homicide Branch began their investigation. Information emerged that two male suspects were seen fleeing the area in a vehicle with heavily tinted windows. As of the days following the shooting, no arrests had been made in connection with the homicide. The Metropolitan Police Department issued a public appeal for information, offering a reward of up to $25,000 for any tips that would lead to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the death of Aaron Derricott, Jr. The case remains an active investigation as his family and community await justice.
