In the summer of 2018, a burst of gunfire on a Monday evening in Northeast Washington, D.C., ended the life of 21-year-old Dion DeMarco Boyd. The fatal shooting occurred at approximately 5:25 p.m. on July 30th in the 1400 block of Maryland Avenue, NE.
The investigation into the death of the young man, a male, led to the arrests of two individuals, Stephon Evans and Kewon Hunter.
Both men were subsequently charged with first-degree murder while armed, conspiracy, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and carrying a pistol without a license.
As the case proceeded through the legal system, one of the co-defendants, Stephon Evans, became entangled in another homicide case. Eventually, Evans entered into a plea agreement with prosecutors. In connection with Dion DeMarco Boyd's death, he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of carrying a pistol without a license. In a separate case, he pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. While Evans accepted the plea deal, he maintained his innocence in Boyd's death. Kewon Hunter, the other man charged in Boyd's killing, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter while armed.
