Originally from El Salvador, Jefferson was brought to the United States by his mother when he was just a baby, seeking a safer life away from the threats of gangs in their home country. He was known as a vibrant and engaged member of his community, an alumnus of the DC SCORES program where he was remembered as a skilled and passionate soccer player. His death left his family, friends, and the wider school community heartbroken and searching for answers.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, police responded to reports of the incident and found Jefferson unconscious and unresponsive. Despite the efforts of emergency medical services who transported him to a local hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. The Metropolitan Police Department quickly launched a homicide investigation into his death. They believe an altercation took place in the school parking lot just before the shooting.
