In the late afternoon of a summer day in the nation's capital, tragedy struck in the Southeast quadrant of the city. On Friday, July 21, 2023, a Black/African American man named Malik Haggans lost his life at the age of 27. The incident unfolded around 4:48 p.m. in the 600 block of 46th Place, SE, a residential area that was soon to become the scene of a homicide investigation.
First responders from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Sixth District were dispatched to the location following a report of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered Haggans in the hallway of a residential building. He had sustained gunshot wounds and showed no signs of life. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to the scene and confirmed that Haggans was deceased. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body was later transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Although Haggans was found in Washington, D.C., his residence was listed as Bowie, Maryland.
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch are actively investigating the fatal shooting of Malik Haggans. As of now, the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with the case. The investigation is ongoing, and the police are urging the public to come forward with any information that might lead to the apprehension and conviction of the person or persons responsible. To encourage community assistance, the Metropolitan Police Department is offering a substantial reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the homicide of Malik Haggans.
