In the summer of 2023, a violent outburst in Southeast Washington, D.C. claimed the life of 34-year-old Reginald Gilbert. On the evening of August 5th, Gilbert was present in the 1600 block of Good Hope Road, Southeast, when gunfire erupted. The chaotic scene left a total of five people shot. When emergency services arrived, Gilbert, along with 27-year-old Tymea Cook and 35-year-old Bernard Hodges, were found with no signs of life.
Two other adult male victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries.
The investigation into the triple homicide pointed to a grim picture of indiscriminate violence. Court documents later revealed that a group had been gathered on the sidewalk when a car pulled up and three individuals emerged, opening fire on the crowd. In response, three other individuals at the scene returned fire. The exchange left the area littered with at least 84 bullet casings, a testament to the intensity of the confrontation, which authorities believe was rooted in a gang feud.
More than two years after the deadly shooting, the Metropolitan Police Department announced a significant development in the case. On October 22, 2025, authorities arrested 28-year-old Rahsaan Smith of Southeast, D.C. He was subsequently charged with three counts of First-Degree Murder While Armed in connection with the deaths of Reginald Gilbert, Tymea Cook, and Bernard Hodges. A crucial piece of evidence leading to Smith's arrest was DNA found on a bullet casing recovered from the scene that was linked to him. Following his arrest, a judge ordered Smith to be held in jail as he awaits trial.
