In the autumn of 2020, on the afternoon of Thursday, October 1st, the life of 42-year-old Arthur Daniels IV, a male resident of Northwest, D.C., was tragically cut short. Responding to a report of a shooting at approximately 4:35 p.m., officers from the Metropolitan Police Department's Fourth District arrived at the 6200 block of 8th Street, Northwest. There, they discovered Mr. Daniels in the front yard of a residence, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. D.C.
Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel promptly transported him to a local hospital, but despite all life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the homicide led to the identification of two teenage suspects. According to a witness, two teenagers were seen in the vicinity shortly before four to five gunshots were heard, after which Daniels was found lying on the ground. Surveillance footage from a nearby building reportedly showed a vehicle, allegedly belonging to one of the suspects, circling the neighborhood multiple times before parking outside Daniels' residence. Text messages between one of the suspects and Daniels suggested a prearranged meeting for the sale of a firearm. An argument allegedly ensued, during which Daniels was heard stating he was unarmed and pleading not to be shot.
In the months that followed, authorities made two arrests in connection with the murder of Arthur Daniels IV. On December 18, 2020, homicide detectives arrested a 17-year-old male, Deon Walters of Northwest, D.C. He was subsequently charged as an adult with first-degree murder while armed. A second suspect, 17-year-old Tre Prillerman, also from Northwest, D.C., was arrested on February 28, 2022, and similarly charged as an adult with first-degree murder while armed.
The legal proceedings against the two suspects moved forward, with both initially charged with first-degree murder while armed, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and other offenses. Prosecutors alleged that both Prillerman and Walters were at the scene when Daniels was shot. Following the shooting, Prillerman allegedly stole Daniels' gold Cadillac, while Walters fled on foot. In a later development, Trey Prillerman accepted a plea agreement, pleading guilty to one count of robbery in exchange for the dismissal of the other charges. Deon Walters, however, rejected a plea offer that would have reduced the first-degree murder charge to second-degree murder, and his case was expected to proceed to trial.
