On June 11, 2013, Lawrence Phillips, aged 45, was shot and killed in the 400 block of 18th Street, Northeast Washington, D.C. The incident occurred at approximately 9:42 p.m. when officers from the Fifth District responded to reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found that Phillips had been transported to a local hospital by bystanders, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
