In the late evening of Tuesday, June 11, 2024, the sound of gunfire shattered the night in the 1900 block of 18th Street, Southeast, in Washington, D.C. Responding to reports of gunshots at approximately 9:57 p.m., Metropolitan Police Department officers arrived to find a young man suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim was identified as 18-year-old Dionte Alexander, a resident of Southeast, D.C. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Public Schools and was just a week away from his high school graduation. The shooting was captured on a neighbor's doorbell camera, which recorded the sound of more than 30 shots being fired. Residents in the area described the terrifying sound as being like a 'war zone.' This incident has heightened concerns about gun violence in the neighborhood, with some residents stating it is becoming a frequent occurrence.
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch are actively investigating the fatal shooting. While police have indicated they are searching for several suspects, no arrests have been announced, and no specific suspects have been publicly identified. The police department is urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward and has offered a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Dionte Alexander's death.
