In the late afternoon sun of September 7, 2022, a burst of violence shattered the calm on a street in Southeast Washington, D.C., leaving a young man's life cut tragically short. Thirty-year-old Kendrick Phillips, a Black male resident of the community, was standing in the 600 block of Chesapeake Street, SE, when gunfire erupted at approximately 4:47 p.m. In the chaotic moments that followed, it became clear that Phillips was not the only one struck.
When officers from the Seventh District arrived at the scene, they discovered three men suffering from gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services were dispatched to the location, and while they were able to transport two of the victims to local hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, Kendrick Phillips succumbed to his wounds at the scene. The brazen daylight shooting sent shockwaves through the neighborhood as detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch began their investigation into the city's latest homicide.
In the days that followed, the police department appealed to the public for assistance, offering a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Phillips's death. Despite these efforts, authorities have not released any detailed descriptions or names of potential suspects.
