In the quiet hills of Cowan, Kentucky, a community was shaken by the tragic death of Angela Jeanette Roberts. On the evening of March 7, 2024, the 58-year-old woman was discovered unresponsive in her car near a cemetery on Dinah Blair Hollow Road. Law enforcement and medical personnel who responded to a 911 call found that she had sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
The Letcher County Coroner pronounced her deceased at the scene, and her death was immediately treated as a homicide.
The investigation into Angela's murder took a significant turn with the arrest of Mark A. Miles, a 65-year-old man from Cowan. The man who initially claimed to have discovered Angela's body and reported it to the authorities became the primary suspect in her death. According to his account, he was driving when he spotted Angela's car at the cemetery and pulled over to check on her. He claimed to have found her slumped over in the driver's seat and, after getting no response, broke a window to gain entry to the vehicle. It was then, he stated, that he discovered she was deceased and called for help.
However, as the Kentucky State Police delved deeper into the circumstances surrounding Angela's death, their investigation led them to suspect Miles's involvement. Over a year after the incident, in May 2025, a Letcher County Grand Jury handed down a murder indictment against him. He was subsequently arrested and lodged in the Letcher County Jail. The case was particularly poignant as Angela had been publicly seeking justice for her daughter, Patricia 'Trish' Roberts Deatherage, who had been murdered in the same area the previous summer. Angela was last seen actively posting on social media about her daughter's unsolved case just a day before her own life was tragically cut short.
