On a Sunday morning in October, the semblance of a routine vehicle crash in Southeast Washington D.C. unraveled into a homicide investigation. On October 20, 2024, at approximately 8:47 a.m., members of the Sixth District of the Metropolitan Police Department responded to the 1400 block of 18th Street, Southeast, for a reported crash. Upon their arrival, they discovered 28-year-old Leonard Taylor Jr. of Suitland, Maryland, a male, inside a vehicle, unconscious and not breathing.
He was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to the scene, but despite all lifesaving efforts, Taylor was pronounced dead.
The investigation quickly determined that the shooting had not occurred at the crash site but rather in the 1500 block of 19th Street, Southeast. The case was ruled a homicide, prompting a thorough investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department. Authorities offered a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible.
The investigation led to the identification of a suspect, and on Thursday, December 19, 2024, members of the Capitol Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 33-year-old Andre Clark, of no fixed address. Clark was taken into custody in Baltimore, Maryland, pursuant to a DC Superior Court arrest warrant and charged with Second Degree Murder while Armed.
According to the evidence presented, on the morning of the shooting, Clark walked out of a building on 19th Street, SE, and approached Taylor, who was sitting in the driver's seat of a gray sedan. Clark walked up to the driver's side, leaned toward the window, and pointed a firearm at Taylor. As Taylor began to drive away, Clark fired his gun, striking him in the back. On May 5, 2025, Andre Clark pleaded guilty to second-degree murder while armed. Subsequently, he was sentenced to 19 years in prison, to be followed by five years of supervised release. During the sentencing, Taylor's mother stated that her world had 'come crashing down' since her son's death.
