In the early morning hours of Saturday, June 21, 2014, a tragic event unfolded in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington, D.C., forever altering the lives of those involved. Luis E. Avila Melendez, a 27-year-old Hispanic man, became the victim of a fatal shooting. The incident occurred around 2:23 a.m. near the intersection of Fuller Street and Mozart Place, Northwest.
Responding to a call for a shooting, Metropolitan Police Department officers arrived to find Mr.
Avila Melendez in the 1600 block of Columbia Road, Northwest, suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency medical services personnel quickly transported him to a local hospital in an effort to save his life. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the homicide led to a significant development in early July of that year. On Wednesday, July 2, 2014, police arrested a suspect in connection with the shooting. The individual taken into custody was identified as 20-year-old Manuel Antonio Garcia of Northeast, D.C. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder while armed for his alleged involvement in the death of Luis Avila Melendez. Further court proceedings saw Manuel Garcia plead guilty to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter.
