In the winter of 2017, on December 28th, a burst of gunfire shattered the morning calm in Northeast Washington, D.C., leaving a young man's life extinguished. Ronzay Green, a 23-year-old male, was fatally shot around 11:25 a.m. in the 900 block of Eastern Avenue NE. He was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds and rushed to a local hospital, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
According to some accounts, Green was shot in the chest and hand as he was leaving a 7-Eleven.
The investigation into Green's death swiftly led to a suspect. On December 31, 2017, just three days after the shooting, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 23-year-old Dennis Whitaker of Northeast, D.C. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder while armed in connection with Green's death.
The motive behind the shooting was initially believed to be connected to a credit card scheme. It was reported that Green and two other individuals who were also killed on the same day, Armani Coles and Kerrice Lewis, were all involved in this scheme with Whitaker. Authorities came to believe that Whitaker killed Green, and in retaliation for Green's death, two other men, Marcel Vines and Malique Lewis, kidnapped and murdered Coles and Kerrice Lewis.
The tragic events of that day set off a chain of violent retribution. Marcel Vines and Malique Lewis were eventually found guilty of the revenge kidnappings and murders of Coles and Kerrice Lewis. While Whitaker was arrested for Green's murder, the subsequent court cases revealed a complex and interconnected web of violence that began with the death of Ronzay Green.
