In the late afternoon of Friday, November 4, 2022, a sense of normalcy was shattered in the Shaw neighborhood of Northwest, Washington, D.C. At approximately 4:43 p.m., in an alley in the 700 block of N Street, NW, gunfire erupted, tragically cutting short the life of 15-year-old Makai Green. The young male, a resident of Northwest, D.C., was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency services rushed him to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
Makai was reportedly with a group of other teenagers in the alley near the Washington Convention Center when the incident occurred. A suspect was seen exiting a dark-colored Mercedes sedan before opening fire on the group. The sudden violence left a community in shock and a family devastated. In the days following the shooting, Makai's mother expressed her profound grief and frustration, lamenting that she would have to bury her child just a day before her own birthday. His coach remembered him as a pleasant and quiet young person who loved to play basketball and go to school, with a primary focus on making his mother happy. A vigil was held in the same alley where he was killed, with family and community members gathering to honor his memory before marching to a nearby basketball court where he often played.
The Metropolitan Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the homicide. They sought the public's assistance in gathering information, offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible. Detectives released images of a person and a vehicle of interest to the case, described as a dark-colored Mercedes. Despite these efforts and the circulation of the suspect's and vehicle's images, no arrests have been announced in connection with the fatal shooting of Makai Green. The case remains an open investigation as his family and community continue to await justice.
