In the late afternoon of a winter day in Washington, D.C., a life was tragically cut short. On Saturday, February 4, 2023, 39-year-old Aaron Robinson, a male resident of Northwest, D.C., was shot and killed in the 1400 block of Spring Road, Northwest. The incident occurred at approximately 4:04 p.m. inside the vestibule of a residential building. Responding officers from the Fourth District of the Metropolitan Police Department discovered Robinson at the scene.
Despite the immediate response from DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services, he showed no signs of life and was pronounced dead at the location before being transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
The investigation into the homicide led to the identification of a suspect. Lorenzo Goldsmith, who was 20 years old at the time of his arraignment, was arrested and charged in connection with Robinson's death. Initially facing a charge of first-degree premeditated murder while armed, Goldsmith later reached a plea agreement. On February 13, 2025, he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter while armed. The plea deal included an agreed-upon sentencing range of 10 to 14 years in prison.
During the legal proceedings, details of the moments leading up to the fatal shooting were revealed. Camera footage from inside the apartment building showed Robinson and his fiancée returning from dinner when they encountered Goldsmith, who had been waiting for them. Goldsmith repeatedly asked Robinson to step outside and indicated that he was armed. Robinson eventually went outside with Goldsmith, while his fiancée remained inside. It was then that Goldsmith shot Robinson multiple times. Despite the plea deal, Robinson's family expressed their disagreement and shared emotional victim impact statements with the court. In June 2025, a judge sentenced Lorenzo Goldsmith to 12 years in prison for his role in the death of Aaron Robinson.
