Zyion Turner, a 15-year-old male, was fatally shot inside his home on the 4200 block of 4th Street, SE. Despite the immediate response from D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services, Zyion was pronounced dead at the scene. His mother, in a heartfelt plea for support, shared the devastating detail that her son was murdered while he was asleep in their home.
The loss of a young life in such a violent manner sent ripples of grief and concern through the community. The principal of Eastern High School, where Zyion was a student, mourned his death, noting that he had been making personal and academic improvements. The Metropolitan Police Department announced the arrest of 17-year-old Navar Rogers of Southeast, D.C. Rogers, who was an acquaintance of Zyion, was charged as an adult with Second Degree Murder While Armed. A subsequent court hearing in April 2025 revealed more details about the investigation. A judge determined there was probable cause to detain Rogers, citing evidence that suggested the crime may have been premeditated. Prosecutors pointed to surveillance footage and witness testimony as key components of their case. During the hearing, it was also disclosed that a gun was found under a couch where Rogers was staying at the time of his arrest, and that authorities had allegedly found pictures of him with other firearms on his phone. While Rogers' defense attorney argued that the case against his client was based on circumstantial evidence, the judge found the evidence to be substantial enough to proceed.
