In the late afternoon of September 20, 2023, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace in Marvin Gaye Park in Northeast Washington, D.C., leaving one man dead and another wounded. The deceased was identified as 64-year-old Dwain Francis Day, a male resident of Southwest D.C. The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. in the 5200 block of Foote Street, Northeast. When officers from the Metropolitan Police Department's Sixth District arrived at the scene, they discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services responded, but their life-saving efforts were not enough for Day, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and was reported to be conscious. According to his niece, Day may not have been the intended target of the shooter.
She stated that he was with a group of men when the gunman opened fire, aiming for someone else in the group.
In the immediate aftermath, homicide detectives launched an investigation into the shooting. The Metropolitan Police Department issued a public appeal for information, offering a reward of up to $25,000 for any tips that would lead to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the homicide. As of the days following the incident, authorities had not identified any suspects and no arrests had been made in connection with the fatal shooting.
