In the early hours of a summer morning in Washington, D.C., a burst of gunfire shattered the peace, leaving a tragic scene in its wake. On Saturday, August 5, 2023, 30-year-old Jamal Morgan, a male resident of Southeast Washington, was fatally shot in the Adams Morgan neighborhood. The shooting occurred at approximately 1:01 a.m. in the 2500 block of Ontario Road, NW, just a couple of blocks from the lively strip of bars and restaurants on 18th Street.
Jamal was not the only victim of
this violent act. His older brother, 34-year-old James Morgan, was also killed at the scene. A third man, 42-year-old Vincent Martin, also from Southeast D.C., was critically injured and transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries two days later. An autopsy revealed that Jamal Morgan had sustained four gunshot wounds. The incident was part of a particularly violent weekend in the city, which saw a significant spike in homicides.
The investigation into the triple homicide led D.C. police to two suspects. In December 2023, authorities arrested 37-year-old Renza Nieem Bryant and 32-year-old Jalonte Thompkins. Both men were subsequently charged with three counts of first-degree murder. Court documents suggest that the shooting may have been precipitated by an interaction between the victims and the suspects in a nearby park shortly before the incident. According to police, Bryant and Thompkins are believed to be affiliated with a neighborhood crew.
Surveillance footage reportedly captured Thompkins reaching for his waistband as if to draw a firearm during the interaction in the park. After the three victims walked away, the suspects are said to have followed them before opening fire. Police described the attack as a conscious decision by the suspects to 'conspire, pursue, track behind and entrap the decedents by going around the block to flank them'. Two firearms were recovered near the deceased men. Jalonte Thompkins has pleaded not guilty to the charges, and a trial is scheduled for May 2026.
