On a cold December morning in 2017, a dispute between two shuttle bus drivers at the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. escalated into a fatal encounter. Brian Andrew Gibson, a 45-year-old man, was shot and killed on December 8th, in the 6900 block of Georgia Avenue NW. Both Gibson and his alleged assailant were employed to transport construction workers at the site.
The events that transpired that morning stemmed from an argument between Gibson and his colleague,
59-year-old Koonce Wright. According to court documents, Wright claimed that the altercation turned physical, alleging that Gibson struck him with enough force to dislodge some of his teeth. Wright stated that he then retrieved a. 38-caliber revolver and shot Gibson as he was moving away from him. It was reported that after the initial shot, Wright stood over Gibson and fired again.
Immediately following the shooting, police were called to the scene where they found Gibson with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Law enforcement officials arrested Koonce Wright later the same day and charged him with second-degree murder while armed. In some court documents, the homicide was classified as domestic in nature. Wright contended that he acted in self-defense, fearing what Gibson might do next. He was ordered to be held in custody pending a preliminary hearing.
