On a Friday morning, March 10, 2017, the life of 24-year-old Tyrone Johnson of Southeast, Washington, D.C., was tragically cut short. At approximately 11:15 am, police responded to reports of a shooting in the 2300 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, Southeast. Upon arrival, they discovered Johnson suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was a male. Emergency services transported him to a local hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The
investigation into Johnson's death led to the identification and eventual arrest of three suspects. On December 29, 2017, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force apprehended a 28-year-old male from Landover, Maryland, and a 23-year-old male from Southeast, D.C. Both were charged with First Degree Murder while Armed. The pursuit of justice continued, and on March 19, 2019, a third suspect, 30-year-old Gabriel Brown of Southeast, D.C., was arrested and also charged with First Degree Murder while Armed.
In February 2024, the legal proceedings for two of the co-defendants, Gabriel Brown and Antonio Upshaw, culminated in sentencing. Both had accepted plea deals in December 2023. Brown pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 14 years of incarceration. Upshaw pleaded guilty to one count of accessory after the fact to second-degree murder. He was sentenced to time served, which amounted to four years, nine months, and 15 days, followed by three years of supervised release. During the sentencing, the court heard poignant victim impact statements from Johnson's mother and daughter, who detailed the profound and lasting impact his death has had on their lives.
