Around 12:30 p.m., a dark green Lincoln Continental drove by, and someone inside opened fire on the group.
The sudden eruption of violence left chaos and
bloodshed in its wake. Kirkland was struck in the arm and body by the gunfire. He was rushed to the Washington Hospital Center, but his injuries proved fatal. Two other teenagers were also wounded in the brazen daylight attack; a 19-year-old was shot in the hip, and a 17-year-old was hit in the leg. Both were transported to hospitals for their injuries. In the immediate aftermath, many of the onlookers scattered, and police later found plastic bags containing drugs at the scene.
Investigators at the time described the shooting as a 'random drive-by.' The Metropolitan Police Department opened a homicide investigation and has since sought assistance from the public for any information regarding the incident. However, years have passed, and the case of Gregory Kirkland's murder remains unsolved, with no arrests made and no suspects publicly identified.
