On a late summer evening in Washington, D.C., the life of 21-year-old Juwaan Henry was tragically cut short. On Thursday, August 25, 2022, in the 800 block of 7th Street, Northwest, violence erupted, leaving the young man from Silver Spring, Maryland, with multiple gunshot wounds. First responders arrived at the scene around 8:15 p.m. and quickly transported him to a local hospital.
Despite their efforts, Juwaan Henry succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch immediately launched an investigation into the fatal shooting. In the days that followed, detectives worked to identify a suspect, releasing surveillance camera photos to the public in hopes of gathering information. The department offered a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Henry's death. Their investigation led them to identify a suspect in the case.
Nearly seven months after the shooting, an arrest was made. On Wednesday, March 15, 2023, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force apprehended 25-year-old Dwayne Brooks Jr., of Southwest, D.C. Brooks was subsequently charged with first-degree murder while armed. Court proceedings followed, and in November 2023, a judge modified Brooks' release conditions, allowing him to leave his home to search for employment. Later that month, his release conditions were further eased from home confinement to a curfew with GPS monitoring. The trial for Dwayne Brooks Jr. in connection with the death of Juwaan Henry was scheduled to take place in November of 2026.
