On the evening of July 17, 2023, Robert Lavender, a 44-year-old man, was resting on a bench in the 600 block of Monroe Street, Northeast, in Washington, D.C., after finishing his shift as the manager of the BGR 'Burgers Grilled Right' restaurant near Catholic University. While waiting for a ride home, he was approached by two individuals who had agreed to rob him. In a brief and violent encounter that lasted approximately thirty seconds to a minute, Lavender was shot in the head.
Emergency services responded to a report of the shooting at around 9:48 p.m. and transported him to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the homicide led authorities to 18-year-old Jaleil Jones of Northwest, D.C. Surveillance footage played a crucial role in the case, showing two individuals, one identified as Jones, approaching Lavender. The footage captured the moments of the assault and showed the suspects fleeing the scene. It was reported that Lavender was known to carry a black and white crossbody bag containing a handgun, and one of the suspects, who was not carrying a bag before the incident, was seen leaving with one.
Jaleil Jones was arrested on September 1, 2023, and subsequently indicted by a grand jury on charges of conspiracy, first-degree murder while armed robbery, and two counts of possession of a firearm during a crime of violence. A judge found probable cause for the case to move forward, citing the 'random, senseless act of violence' and noting that the crime was 'brutal and cold-hearted.' In July 2024, Jones accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter while armed. As part of the agreement, he faces a sentencing range of nine to thirteen years in prison. While Jones was arrested and prosecuted, the second individual involved in the robbery and murder has not been publicly identified. The Metropolitan Police Department has continued to investigate the case and has sought the public's help in identifying the second suspect.
