On what should have been a night of remembrance and family gathering, Mary 'Unique' Spears, a 27-year-old mother of three, lost her life in a senseless act of violence. The tragic events unfolded in the early morning hours of October 5, 2014, outside the American Legion Joe Louis Post No. 375 on Detroit's east side. Mary was attending a memorial celebration for a family member, surrounded by loved ones, when she became the target of unwanted advances from a man she did not know.
The man,
later identified as 38-year-old Mark Dorch, repeatedly harassed Spears, asking for her name and number despite her polite rejections and the fact that her fiancé was present. As the evening wore on, Dorch's persistence escalated into aggression. When Mary and her family decided to leave, an argument ensued, and security was forced to escort Dorch from the building. However, instead of leaving the premises, he waited outside. As Mary, her fiancé, and other family members exited, Dorch opened fire into the crowd. Mary was shot and killed at the scene. Five other people, including her fiancé and other relatives, were wounded in the shooting.
Dorch attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended by police, who also recovered the weapon used in the shooting. He was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder, five counts of assault with intent to murder, and felony firearm possession. During his trial, Dorch claimed self-defense, an assertion that was contradicted by witness testimony and video evidence. The evidence showed Dorch harassing Spears and then firing his weapon after being confronted by her fiancé.
In June 2015, Mark Dorch was convicted of second-degree murder, five counts of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, and a felony firearm charge. He was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison for the murder conviction. At his sentencing, Dorch offered an apology to the Spears family, stating that it was not his intention to cause trouble that night. The tragic death of Mary Spears left behind her three young sons and a grieving family, and it brought a renewed focus to the serious and sometimes fatal consequences of street harassment.
