Amidst the gathering, 35-year-old Marcus Johnson, a male resident of the neighborhood, found himself in a tragic confrontation. Concerned about the presence of children, Johnson attempted to intervene and stop individuals from discharging firearms. This courageous act would unfortunately be his last.
At approximately 8:44 p.m., in the 1400 block of 1st Street, NW, Marcus Johnson was fatally shot. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
For over a decade, the case of Marcus Johnson's death remained unsolved, a cold case that haunted his family and the community. His mother, Mildred L. Johnson, became a relentless advocate for justice, refusing to let her son's memory fade. Every year on his birthday, she would walk the streets of Truxton Circle, often accompanied by the lead homicide detective, hanging posters and pleading for anyone with information to come forward. Her unwavering determination became a powerful symbol of a mother's love and her quest for answers.
In December 2019, more than 13 years after the shooting, a breakthrough in the investigation brought a long-awaited development. The Metropolitan Police Department announced the arrest of a suspect, Levon Williams, 32, also of Northwest Washington. Williams was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Marcus Johnson. At the time of his arrest for Johnson's murder, Williams was already serving a 25-year prison sentence for another killing that occurred in 2008. The arrest brought a sense of closure to a family that had endured years of uncertainty and grief, a testament to the persistence of a mother who never gave up hope for justice for her son.
