In the early morning hours of Sunday, July 6, 2014, the life of 23-year-old Dashawn Hammonds, a Black male, was tragically cut short in Washington, D.C. At approximately 5:23 a.m., gunshots echoed in the rear of the 1200 block of Simms Place, NE. When police arrived at the scene, they found Hammonds suffering from a gunshot wound.
Emergency medical services rushed him to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
He was pronounced dead, leaving his family and friends to grapple with the sudden and violent loss. The Metropolitan Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into the shooting.
In the days that followed, authorities appealed to the public for assistance, urging anyone with information to come forward.
