In the early hours of a Friday morning in Washington, D.C., the life of 43-year-old Damon Bell, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On June 14, 2019, at approximately 1:18 a.m., police responded to reports of gunshots in the 1600 block of West Virginia Avenue, Northeast. Upon arrival, they discovered Bell inside a vehicle, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency services transported him to a local hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead. At the time of his death, Damon Bell had no fixed address.
The investigation into Bell's death led authorities to a suspect. In December 2019, six months after the shooting, 22-year-old Brandon Wiggins of Northeast, D.C., was arrested and charged with first-degree murder while armed. Court documents suggest a possible motive behind the fatal shooting. It is alleged that Wiggins believed Bell had stolen a friend's vehicle.
When the friend was unable to retrieve the car, Wiggins reportedly took matters into his own hands, leading to the deadly confrontation.
Following the arrest, the case against Brandon Wiggins proceeded through the legal system. In a court hearing in October 2022, Wiggins made the decision to waive his right to DNA and ballistics testing. A trial readiness hearing was scheduled for March of the following year, with a trial date set for April 2023. The Metropolitan Police Department had offered a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Damon Bell's death.
