In the early evening of Tuesday, February 6, 2024, the life of 48-year-old Rufus Brown came to a tragic end on a street in Southeast Washington, D.C. At approximately 5:02 p.m., officers from the Metropolitan Police Department's Sixth District were dispatched to the 3200 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, Southeast, following a report of a traffic accident.
Upon their arrival, what was initially thought to be a car crash was quickly discovered to be a grim scene of violence.
Inside a vehicle, police found Rufus Brown suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was unconscious and not breathing, and despite any efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation was soon taken over by the Homicide Branch.
In the days that followed, authorities identified the victim as Rufus Brown, a man with no fixed address. As of the initial reports, the police had not released any information regarding a possible motive for the shooting or any description of a suspect or suspects. The circumstances leading up to the fatal shooting remained largely unknown. The Metropolitan Police Department has offered a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this homicide and has asked for the public's assistance in their ongoing investigation.
