On a Wednesday evening in Washington, D.C., the lives of two men were abruptly ended in a burst of gunfire that also left three others wounded. The incident unfolded at approximately 9:50 p.m. on September 27, 2023, in the 2500 block of 14th Street, Northeast, in the Brentwood area. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered 41-year-old Nathaniel Limes, a male resident of Richmond, Virginia, and 46-year-old James Cooper Jr. of Northeast, D.C., both suffering from fatal gunshot wounds.
Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
The violence of that night extended beyond the two fatalities. A third victim was found at the scene with gunshot injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Two additional victims from the same shooting were later located at area hospitals, also receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. The shooting was described by the acting D.C. police chief as the result of a 'crew-on-crew senseless argument' where firearms were introduced to settle a dispute.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch launched an investigation into the quintuple shooting. As of early 2024, no arrests had been publicly announced in connection with the murders of Nathaniel Limes and James Cooper Jr., and their case remains listed as an unsolved homicide. Authorities have identified three male suspects who were seen fleeing the scene in a gray SUV. The police have offered a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the homicides and have asked anyone with information to come forward.
