On a Tuesday afternoon, May 20, 2025, 31-year-old Kian-Wayne Magruder, a Black/African American male from Temple Hills, Maryland, was fatally shot in Northeast Washington, D.C. The incident occurred just before 2 p.m. in the 800 block of 26th Street NE, adjacent to the former Spingarn High School where an elementary school track and field championship was underway.
Magruder was at the event to support his girlfriend's son.
As Magruder was walking on the sidewalk, a car pulled up, and three men exited the vehicle. At least one of the men opened fire, striking Magruder. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The brazen daylight shooting, which unfolded near hundreds of children, parents, and coaches, prompted the immediate suspension of the track meet as school officials rushed students to safety.
The assailants fled the scene immediately after the shooting. The vehicle they used was later discovered in flames in the Fort Lincoln neighborhood of Northeast Washington, an apparent attempt to destroy evidence.
The Metropolitan Police Department is actively investigating the homicide and has offered a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. As of early June 2025, no arrests had been announced, and authorities had not publicly identified any suspects or a motive for the killing. The investigation remains ongoing, with law enforcement, including the FBI and ATF, seeking assistance from the public. Magruder was remembered by his mother as a devoted father of two, a family man, and an electrician apprentice who was passionate about physical fitness.
