In the early morning hours of October 16, 2022, violence erupted in the 2500 block of Pomeroy Road, Southeast, Washington, D.C., leaving 32-year-old Jamontate Brown, a male of no fixed address, dead from multiple gunshot wounds. The Metropolitan Police Department responded to a report of gunshots at approximately 12:10 a.m. and discovered Brown unconscious on a sidewalk.
Emergency services arriving at the scene found no signs of life, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Brown's death pointed to a larger conflict, described by prosecutors as a 'beef' between rival neighborhood crews, the Wellington Park and Stanton Oaks groups. It was alleged that Brown, associated with the Stanton Oaks crew, had gone to the Wellington Park neighborhood to cause havoc by opening fire in a parking lot frequented by the rival crew. In the ensuing violence, Brown was struck by eleven bullets. A handgun was found on his person when his body was discovered. The crime scene was extensive, with investigators recovering 80 spent cartridge casings, four live rounds of ammunition, and 22 bullet fragments.
On December 20, 2022, the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 26-year-old Aaron Murchison of Southeast, D.C., in connection with the homicide. Murchison was subsequently charged with Second Degree Murder while Armed. During his trial, the prosecution argued that Murchison, a member of the Wellington Park crew, left the safety of an apartment to engage in the shootout that resulted in Brown's death. However, Murchison's defense attorneys contended that Brown was responsible for instigating the violence by committing a 'mass shooting' and that Murchison did not have a firearm or shoot anyone that night. The defense highlighted the lack of DNA or fingerprint evidence linking their client to the murder. Furthermore, they challenged the reliability of witness identification and pointed out discrepancies in the description of the shooter's clothing compared to what Murchison was seen wearing on surveillance footage. Following a ten-day trial, a jury acquitted Aaron Murchison of all charges on February 11, 2025, and he was ordered to be released from jail.
