In the Brightwood neighborhood of Northwest Washington, on a Saturday afternoon, the sounds of the Open Streets Georgia Avenue event were pierced by the sharp crack of gunfire. It was shortly before 1:30 p.m. on October 7, 2023, when violence erupted in the 5500 block of 7th Street NW, tragically cutting short the life of 36-year-old Alonzo Jessie Atkins.
