In the Brightwood neighborhood of Northwest Washington, on a Saturday afternoon, the sounds of the Open Streets Georgia Avenue event were pierced by the sharp crack of gunfire. It was shortly before 1:30 p.m. on October 7, 2023, when violence erupted in the 5500 block of 7th Street NW, tragically cutting short the life of 36-year-old Alonzo Jessie Atkins.
He was found in an alley, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The sudden violence left a community in shock, particularly as it occurred near a planned city event featuring activities and musical performances. While the motive for the shooting remains unknown, police have stated there appears to be no connection between the killing and the Georgia Avenue event. The aftermath of the shooting was a grim scene, with two vehicles also struck by gunfire, bearing silent witness to the deadly encounter.
In the wake of his death, the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch launched an investigation. To date, no arrests have been made, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects. The investigation is ongoing, and detectives are appealing to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Alonzo Jessie Atkins' death. A reward of up to $25,000 has been offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.
